How Is Your Candle Burning?

Each morning as I settle in to my “tea with Jesus” time I light a candle. I read a book not too long ago that the character in the story lit a “Christ candle” to bring her heart, mind and soul into alignment with His presence as she set aside time with the Lord. I tend to get really distracted by things during my time with the Lord and I have to reign myself in or I just lose focus on Him. Lighting the candle helps me focus. As I was lighting my candle yesterday to begin my set aside time with Jesus to read His word, pour out my heart, and stop moving and sit still long enough to listen for Him, He began to speak to me about the candle.

In John 8:12 Jesus says He is the light of the world. In Matthew 5:14-16 Jesus tells us to be the light of the world. We are to be a people that shine so brightly that people see and glorify our Father in Heaven.

As I took my lighter to ignite the wick in my candle, I noticed that it had a big carbon ball on the end of the wick. It was difficult to light the wick with the carbon ball on it and the flame did not burn very brightly. The Lord started to speak into my spirit about my own life. He began to ask me where I had taken offense, where I was holding onto unforgiveness, where I had allowed bitterness to build up in my life. He showed me that all these things hinder our light and do not allow our light to shine brightly. So I spent some time soul searching and realized I had some amends to make. I had to take some time to forgive myself and others and ask forgiveness for my own actions that had caused hurt in other people’s lives. As I submitted to this process with Jesus, I could feel my light becoming brighter.

This morning before I lit my candle, I pinched off that nasty carbon ball and my wick was ready to receive the light, energy and power that the fire brings. As I lit the candle it immediately received the flame and burned strong and bright. Not only did it give light, but it produced a beautiful aroma not tainted by the burnt stuff of yesterday. I also believe that the Holy Spirit had pinched off something black and yucky in my life and I was able to receive the light, energy and power that the fire of the Holy Spirit brings. I believe it is important to take the time to allow God to show us where we need to have carbon balls pinched off in our lives. Are you willing to allow Him to help you burn brightly?
